7 Centers App & Interactive Art

Lauren Schoth

This product is a multimedia-based app that introduces users to Eastern philosophies, holistic practices, and alternative medicines. Using the seven energy centers within the body as the foundation to explore techniques, such as meditation and yoga, 7 Centers, is an app that takes a less confusing and more accessible approach to wellness.

7 Centers pilots users through the often-overwhelming process of starting and maintaining wellness practices and general self-care. Using easy to understand language and appealing UX and UI designs, 7 Centers uses a step by step process that leads to a personalized instructional experience. Uniquely, this app also functions as a control for a physical art component that is designed to be used in tandem to the app.

With the intention of engaging the user in a new way, I wanted to create an interactive visual tool that promotes self-care more actively. I designed a prototype that users could purchase separately that would help them re-focus on their practice. The customizable LED-based wall art would be controlled through the app and would showcase an array of light patterns that would correspond to the user’s personal practice. Having a physical art element for the office or home is meant to be used as an engaging meditative tool and a practical visual reminder of users’ intentions and practices.

My personal wellness practice started in 2008 and after cultivating my own techniques of accountability, I wanted to develop a product that offers a point of entry for those who are curious and open to the content, but do not know where to start. Today, apps are integrated into everyday life and are familiar vehicles of data tracking. The practice of mindfulness becomes more achievable as users gain more insight about themselves through the use of 7 Centers.

By combining interactive physical art with a familiar digital interface, this product has the potential to expand the awareness of medicinal practices and help people understand them in a way that meets them where they are. Making Eastern philosophies and alternative medicinal teachings accessible, 7 Centers seeks to educate and empower users and allow them to apply the benefits in a real-time through art and technology.
