Cyborgs Among Us

This project is an educational website for students in K-12. It is a look into the lives of a little-known hero who are used to help find people who are trapped in collapsed buildings. I wanted to reach beyond my instructional design abilities and reach into an area that I have little knowledge of. As an Instructional designer I mostly deal with eLearning modules and instructor led material. Over the years I have been increasingly interested in educational websites such as National Geographic and there role in education. With that said my goal is to make an informative webpage and create engaging educational material that would be accessible to all students. I chose to use a CMS like WordPress for the website because I wanted to spend more time on the educational materials than the website. I also wanted to make this engaging in some way and while I could not do this on WordPress. I could do this with a software program called Articulate Storyline. Articulate storyline is an Instructional design software, and I thought it would be a good choice for this project.

Some of the challenges that I hope to address in this project were how to effectively teach a subject in an online environment, and how to make the content more accessible to people with an improved User Interface (UI) and user experience (UX). To do this I followed Richard E Mayer’s 12 Principles of multimedia which shaped the design and presentation of multimedia so it is beneficial to the learner. This guided me on improving how the content is structured and designed. I also wanted to make sure it was more accessible to individuals who wanted to learn about this subject. The way I went about that was instead of creating and individual eLearning course like I’m use to doing, I put the content on the web. This allows anyone with an internet connection to easily access the content. This approach will allow multiple entities such as schools, home school students, and anyone interested in the subject to access this material.
