BACH TO E.D.M.

Michael Costanzo

This project uses digital video and music to explore my personal experiences in the suburban (and sometimes urban infused) environments of the year 2020. Bach 2 EDM is an expression of the polarizing effect that people can feel, living in a twenty-first century capitalist society. By using contrasting images and music, I have emulated the counterpoint technique used by Bach in his compositions to create tension and complexity.

To begin, I had to find a Johann Sebastian Bach piece that would transfer well to electronic dance music. One can take almost any musical piece, from any genre and turn it into EDM, but I chose Bach’s Intervention 13 in A Minor due to its simplicity, while showing the art of counterpoint music. Next, I was able to download the composition in MIDI data form, from one of the many websites, that post almost all the classical great composers for free. These renditions are usually very technical in performance, or to also describe them, I would use the word “stiff”. I then dropped all the data into the professional music software I am proficient with, outlined a few more ideas, voicings, sounds, etc. Next, was the task of compiling from the web, editing, conducting a few camera shoots, to create a video that would work well with a soundtrack. This was a long process that went through many variations, using digital video editing, effects, and transitions, all to get it to where it is now. Then a return to the music: I used all virtual instrument technology, created various voicings with sounds, using analog & digital synthesis with producing and mixing an arrangement that would sync well to the final video compilation.

I would like to think that the impact of this project will allow those who view the film, to maybe find some relevance and how they are not alone in a polarizing world.
